2025 Data Gap-Filling Achievements

In 2025, the Taiwan Biodiversity Information Alliance (TBIA) launched a thematic project dedicated to filling data gaps. Working hand in hand with its partner organizations, the alliance targeted different types of deficiencies, including taxonomic gaps, spatial gaps, and temporal gaps. This year, a total of 852 grid cells were filled, including 36 newly completed grid cells! The overall data coverage across Taiwan has now reached 78.97%. The dataset includes 3,838,564 records of protected species, with the top five taxonomic groups being amphibians, birds, ferns, mammals, and fish.
Below is the interactive section showcasing the results of the 2025 data gap-filling initiative. To ensure the integrity of the results, final statistics for all survey records generated in 2025 were compiled and finalized by the end of February 2026.

🔎 Overview of Major Taxonomic Group Filling

The species coverage rate for the top five taxonomic groups, representing the number of species recorded in our data relative to the total number of species for those corresponding groups in the Taiwan Catalogue of Life (TaiCOL).

🗺️ Spatial Data Gap-Filling Status

Geographic distribution of records using 5×5 km grid cells, used to evaluate the geographic coverage and spatial filling status of each biological group. The 2024/2025 comparison feature visualizes annual progress and spatial distribution changes. Color intensity indicates record counts; blue cells highlight "newly added grids in 2025".

Grid filling definition: A grid is considered "successfully filled" when its accumulated records reach 5,000 or more.

⏱ Temporal Data Gap-Filling Status

Temporal gaps indicate a lack of data during specific periods. These data discontinuities along the timeline can be filled by digitizing archival collections or by promoting the open access of historical and research surveys. The side-by-side bar charts compare the data counts across different years and months, demonstrating the continuity and completeness of the data over time, while also illustrating the current status of temporal data gaps.

📊 Taxonomic Data Gap-Filling Status

Select "Species Coverage Rate" or "Number of Records" to toggle between different annual statistical results. Clicking on a bar for a specific taxonomic group allows you to further examine the annual variations and data growth.
Note: A gray bar in the chart indicates that the number of species recorded for that taxonomic group in that specific year has decreased compared to its proportion of the total species count in the Taiwan Catalogue of Life (TaiCOL) from the previous year. However, a decrease in the number of species does not equate to a change in the total number of records; it simply reflects that the species recorded in that year were more concentrated.
