The Water Resources Agency (WRA), Ministry of Economic Affairs, has been conducting regular river status investigation of 26 rivers since 2002 to understand trends in riverine ecosystems and promote ecological check to mitigate the environmental impact caused by engineering projects.
Additional efforts to maintain ecosystem services include signing a a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency, Ministry of Agriculture, in 2019, with a commitment to balance flood prevention measures and ecosystem services.
In 2021, WRA aligned with the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency's "National Green Network for Land Conservation Project" goals to propose a strategy for blue and green network conservation.
In 2022, WRA joined the Taiwan Biodiversity Information Alliance (TBIA) to open up historical river status investigation data and subsequent ecological data with the aim of integrating data from various agencies to better inform future governance measures.
